Liezel and the City
"Liezel and city? I love the sound of that. I've been seeing the city for months now and I think things are getting pretty serious. And nobody, I mean nobody talks shit about my city"
Of course this is a spin off from a very popular quote from the character Carrie a la "Sex in the City", I'm sure you've heard of this popular cable TV series. Just thinking about my quote makes me ache to head back north to NYC...
(Washington Square Park, my most favorite place in NY. )
I've never really been a suburbanite. Never have, never will. Growing up in Northern NJ/New York City has turned me into a social nomad here in the DC Metro area. Even from day one of moving here to suburbia Maryland, I've always had to venture out, to conquer the latest finds as far as chill bars, hangouts, stores, dives, friends, and all in the name of spontaneously combusting upon discovery. I've only been here 5 years, but I find myself running into people outside of my 'burbs neighborhood.
I've ran into folks I know and attempted the ever so friendly indirect eye contact dance, birthing the nickname "Don't look at me, then I won't look at you, so I won't feel bad for not saying hello" glance. It's funny how you'll find yourself doing everything in your power to avoid conversation when out and about. Even in a city as large and as diverse as the District of Columbia, this simply cannot be avoided. You WILL run into people you know or used to know. (pending on how you look at it) Coincidently you might have met these people once before, but strangely enough you might have had some sort of relationship with the ghost of friends past.
It's always a stroll down memory lane for me when this happens. Rather, a stroll down my subconscious.
(You're always privy to my thoughts here on the LeeZuhhl Blog)
"What's her name, again? Damnit, I wish I had ADD so I wouldn't feel AS guilty."
"Is he the guy that tried to take me home by speaking an unknown languange, even to him, at the pool hall that one time in D.C.?"
"Hey, I'm sure I saw her at that house party in Arlington. She was the chick who slept with the host. Or was that at another party in Mount Pleasant?"
"Wonder if that's his new girlfriend, and GOD I hope she doesn't know about me."
"I know him... I know I know him. Where do I know him?"
"If he knows me, he'll say hi, right? Wait, he's the guy who slept with Stephanie! Met him that one time I had to cut him off! Yikes, his current boo looks like a bad Martha Stewart impersonator."
I find it best NOT to give out your phone number. ALWAYS get their contact information. Cell number, E-mail, fax, smoke signal patterns... **Especially for all the phone stalking maniacs who keep calling my ass for magazine subscriptions, temp work, bookie threats, and best of all "a date.**
It's one thing to bump into people you know by accident, but it's another thing if you happen to bump into people you don't know on purpose. I've had a situation where some stranger knew me from a friend of a friend and found a way to mysteriously appear where I am, at random locales. I'll call in a restraining order as soon as my cell phone frees up from all the heaving breathing hangups.
There's so much the city has to offer, and oh so little time. This past month has been active for me, and will continue to do so. Whether it's watching some hoops action live or on the big screen, doing/going to a comedy show, auditioning for films, attending concerts (recently at the Strathmore, Patriot Center, 9 30 club), getting last minute acting jobs, partaking in special events at UMD, listening in on book readings, or hitting some balls at the driving ranges in VA...
... I'll find my way around this metropolitan area. Who knows, I may run into someone you know. Or someone they know. Or maybe that someone you know who thought they knew you, who knows someone I know, possibly knows you better than to say that they know you. Or worst yet, knows me.

(west coast dullard thought) There's a Washington Square Park in NY? There's one in Portland too....oh yeah, didn't the Portland people hire the landscape architects who did Central Park to design some of that city's greenspaces too?
I better get off the phone so you can make that call......
Sounds like a good month, best o' luck.
